Art Lessons

This is a brief overview of the Visual Arts expectations, including the "enduring understandings" (the important stuff!) for each grade.  This will simplify things, but it is still a good idea to have the curriculum documents handy for reference.  Following this there are some lessons that cover some of these expectations.

Grade 1

·        Primary colours

·        Value (lighter or darker tones of same colour)

·        Kinds of lines (jagged, broken, straight, curved)

·        Horizon line

·        Texture

·        How Art creates mood (emotions)

Grade 2

·        Secondary colours

·        Types of lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal)

·        Symmetrical shapes and forms

Grade 3

·        Warm/Cool colours

·        Characteristics of lines (thick, thin, broken, dotted)

·        Foreground, middle ground, background

·        Symmetrical/asymmetrical shapes and forms

Grade 4

·        Monochromatic colours

·        Emotional quality of lines

·        Overlapping of shapes and forms creates depth

·        Relief /free standing sculpture

·        Create tactile textures

Grade 5

·        Complementary colours

·        Lines and shading to create depth and movement

·        Negative/positive shapes and space

·        Create the illusion of textures

Grade 6

·        Tertiary colours

·        Lines used to direct attention

·        One-point perspective creating depth

·        Shadows and shading to create depth

·        Texture to express emotions

·        Identify function of visual arts in the community

Grade 7

·        Repetition creating movement

·        Identify focal point

·        Formal (symmetrical)/informal (asymmetrical) balance

·        How visual arts affect society and economy

 

Grade 8

·        Repetition of elements unifying the composition (foreground/background)

·        How focal point is created and emphasized

·        How balance is achieved through symmetry/asymmetry

 

All Grades

·        Identify and describe textures

·        Identify elements of design

·        Use a variety of art tools, materials and techniques

·        Make artistic choices

·        Identify in a plan, choices

·        Assess own work, identify areas for improvement

·        Compare works of art/identify artist’s purpose/defend preference
